Hasty decisions could damage your career

Our advice to all those contemplating quitting without an alternative would be quite bluntly, “NO DON’T DO IT”.

A case in point could be the state of career women who take a break to have a baby. The corporate world capitalizes on this when they want to return to their respective careers and they are forced into accepting level drops and reduced salaries as compromises. In short their career break is exploited.

A sabbatical or a mid career break is viewed favorably in the west, however, in India it is frowned upon. In India, especially in senior positions the general perception is that sabbatical serves merely to mask an unfortunate ‘sacking’ by the employer. In many cases, this has been true as certain high level executives have made unexplainable career changes in seemingly impregnable positions. However, even though this perception is not true in all cases, the general feeling holds true across the industry.

My advice to all would be to search before quitting and nowadays there are many avenues. We also advise employees to quit on a good note so that the door is left open in case they want to return at some stage.

In the light of all that we have said, we would summarize that the approach should be exactly as it is while crossing the road – STOP – LOOK AROUND – and THEN GO.
